In the spirit of chance, I find myself on the hunt for discarded card-board boxes. I usually find them at roadsides, alleyways and grocery parking lots. Each cast off box is imprinted with colorful iconic logos from its manufacturer or former contents.Yet, inspite of their seductive veneers they are inadvertently cast off or recycled.

Each cardboard box has traveled a great distance and is constructed for a rough journey  The density and and thickness of their corrugation as well as their bright advertising color is significant in my selection process.  I am looking for a rare quality reserved for enduring characters that have gone as far as they can.

After making loose contour studies on each flattened corrugated surface, I intuitively carve and compose the freshly cut features. Like a game and sometimes a sacred ritual, each Villager comes into being.
